Tower

1984: I imagined this song to be fairly innovative (Maiden) at the time it was written.
Today it's pretty easy to tell which bands (Maiden) influenced my songwriting style, at least in this instance.
The topic (the rise and fall of the Amorite empire (Maiden), told within the context of the biblical account of
the Tower of Babel) is also reminiscent of certain (Maiden) metal bands of the 1980's.

OK, so I listened to a lot of Iron Maiden at the time. And I still do. Oi! Up the Irons!

Synopsis: Heavy Metal historical epic.

Lyrics

Sumerian bodies and minds succumb to our will
Our destiny topples the work of two thousand years
Egyptians and Aryans tremble like children with chill
Their impotent gods less powerful than their fears

Captured Sumerian learning is not all we know
For knowledge is our major weapon to conquer the horde
The meaningless Hebrews in Palestine wait for the blow
They call not to Ra or to Thor but Jehovah their lord

We, the Amorites, claim our destiny
Ruling from Shinaar, here to every sea
From the capital, the city Babel

Soon the whole world will speak the Akkidian tongue
Medes and Greeks and Romans and Saxon savages
Britons, Americans, Russians and all men to come
The future of history shall not be spared our ravages

The seers and prophets say sooth of our fate soon to rise
To be split into factions and bicker away time to come
Assyrian, Persian and Babylonian tribes
But Marduk, the bringer of knowledge and war, makes us one

We, the Amorites, claim our destiny
Ruling from Shinaar, here to every sea
From the capital, the city Babel

The Lord said, "Behold
"The people are one and they have one language
"And this they begin to do
"Now nothing shall be restrained from them
"Which they imagine to do"

"Go to, let us go down
"And there confound their language
"That they may not understand
"One another's speech"

So the Lord scattered them
Thence and abroad across the face of all the earth
They ceased to build
They ceased to build
They ceased to build
