Paint

1988/2002: The riffs to this song were all written in the mid- to late-1980's and my ex-wife came up with the general concept for the lyrics around 1988.
However, I didn't finish the lyrics or put it all together until I started recording this album in 2002.

Synopsis: Alt-Rock song about, well, paint.

Lyrics

Dingy old eyesore spoiling the scene
Miraculous conversion, now it's spiffy and clean
If it was hideous out here you should have seen it inside
But it's amazing how much ugly twenty gallons can hide
Looking at the surface not what's lurking behind
Flaws in the foundation, out of sight, out of mind
All the hidden damage, all the well-hidden years
But is the final value based on how it appears?

Cover it up, cover it up
Decorate, elaborate, create or defend
Obfuscate, eliminate, the same in the end
Trying to look new but you know that it ain't
This run-down place could use a new coat of paint

Emulate the face that launched a thousand ships
The biggest, darkest eyes and the poutiest lips
The silkiest skin on the prettiest face
A magical effect with all the defects erased
Looking in the mirror, see the child in your mind
Stare a little longer; you don't like what you find
Gradual erosion from another long year
But is your final value based on how you appear?

Cover it up, cover it up
Decorate, elaborate, create or defend
Obfuscate, elucidate, the same in the end
Trying to look young but you know that you ain't
Your run-down face could use a new coat of paint

Longing for a dream machine to turn every head
Diabolic candy-apple metal flake red
Glinting hue highlights every sensuous curve
And once it's finally yours it tingles every nerve
Turbocharged deathtrap out for a drive
Standard destination but you'll never arrive
Adrenaline and alcohol, a breathtaking pair
Straighten out the curves and go as fast as you dare
Endless rows of strangers passing slowly to stare
Twisted bones and metal all in need of repair

Cover it up, cover it up
Decorate, elaborate, create or defend
Decimate, obliterate, the same in the end
Trying to look harmless but you know that it ain't
This deadly little space could use a new coat of paint

Painted portraits, painted scenes
Painted jackets, painted jeans
Painted models, painted cars
Painted churches, painted bars

Painted ships with painted sails
Painted bodies, painted nails
Painted bridges, painted lines
Painted fences, painted signs

Painted buildings, painted malls
Painted ceilings, painted walls
Painted windows, painted doors
Painted faces, painted whores

Painted statues, painted bells
Painted heavens, painted hells
Painted husbands, painted wives
Painted children, painted lives

Steel or canvas, stone or skin or colorful page
Stunning reproduction or intriguingly vague
Perceptions of your senses unexpectedly twist
A new appreciation of the beauty you missed
But look around for beauty; if it seems hard to find
You can simulate the beauty that you need in your mind
Tinted ash and charcoal were the choice of the ape
Multi-coloured pixels are the latest escape

Cover it up, cover it up
Majesty and tragedy and glory and pain
Good and evil, love and hate, respect and disdain
Maybe it's beautiful and maybe it ain't
This run-down place could use a new coat of paint
