Just Say No

1983: This song is an homage to Ronnie James Dio.

A little background: I had the extremely good fortune to have the greatest part-time job possible during most of my years in college - playing in a band.
Unfortunately, my senior year I was forced to take a "real" job which, besides being more distracting from my coursework than gigging, also utterly sucked.
Dio's music, particularly the then-new album Holy Diver, helped keep me sane enough to graduate.
This song was written at that time, inspired by and intentionally reminiscent of the style of that album.

Special thanks to Tim Wilhelm for playing lead guitar on this track.

Synopsis: Heavy Metal song about self-empowerment in the face of temptation, opposition, indecision and apathy

Lyrics

Your spirit wanders through the sea of endless other lives
You hear them calling out your name, but where will you arrive
The sirens' song is in your ear, your body at the mast
The ropes are weak; you'd better pray to God they hold you fast

Temptation burns up and down your spine in the sun's last dying light
One is satin, one is steel; she says "take one little bite"
The stars above your grave will shine no different than before
And men will act on what they feel until men are born no more

Just say no when they say not to fly
No - when they say you're too high
No - when they say that you'll die if you do
Just say no when they look in your eye
No - when they tell you the lie
No - when they say that the sky isn't blue

Once upon a time were those who died for what they felt
Now we bury the stench of greed in the ground on which they knelt
Ask some people why they let it slide; they don't have a clue (but I can tell you)
It hurts less to live with what they see than to fight for something new

Just say no when they say not to try
No - when they beg you and cry
No - when they offer to buy your soul
Just say no when they threaten and sigh
No - when they scream, "tell me why!"
No - when they say you belie your goal

Metallic rainbows flashing
At last your mind can see
The truth behind our passion
I am you and you are me

Your spirit sails across the sea of endless other lives
You feel it winding through the futures never to arrive
The captain's heart has desert dreams of wolves' breath on his heel
But you awake and you can choose the course that becomes real

Just say no when they say not to fly
No - when they say you're too high
No - when they say that you'll die if you do
Just say no when they look in your eye
No - when they tell you that lie
No - when they say that the sky isn't blue
