Absalom

1987: One of the last songs I wrote before joining Phantasm.

A tale of incestuous rape, conspired vengance, drunken debauchery, fratricide, miscarried justice and war,
revolving around a flawed and tragically doomed protagonist. Eat your heart out, Quentin Tarentino; we're talkin' Old Testament now.

Synopsis: Heavy Metal biblical epic.

Lyrics

"Oh my sister, bring me bread; I fear that I am dying"
The young girl in her virgin's gown did not know he was lying
"Absalom", she cried, "our brother made me lay beside him"
He told her not to breathe a word while vengance boiled inside him

"Oh my brother, I have thrown a party for your pleasure"
Absalom with wine and song ensured his brother's leisure
On his signal from the stage his servants lunged with daggers
Stabbing at the man until his final drunken stagger

Absalom, Absalom, third son of the king
Absalom, Absalom, raise your voice to sing
Absalom, Absalom, ambassador of peace
Absalom, Absalom, your song will never cease

"Oh my father, judge me just like servants, theives or soldiers"
"Oh my son, I could not live with your death on my shoulders"
His own life spared he saw the light and pointed out the choices
His songs of justice rang out in a thousand chanting voices

Absalom, Absalom, third son of the king
Absalom, Absalom, raise your voice to sing
Absalom, Absalom, ambassador of peace
Absalom, Absalom, your song will never cease

Absalom told his people there would be no war
Absalom told his people they could be much more
Absalom told his people love could win the day (find a way)
But all his words and all his songs could not keep them at bay

The revolution was a tiny ripple in the sea
Twenty thousand died to swell the tides of history
"Oh my son, the word has come that with them you have died"
The king threw back his head and to the heavens loudly cried

Absalom, Absalom, third son of the king
Absalom, Absalom, raise your voice to sing
Absalom, Absalom, ambassador of peace
Absalom, Absalom, your song will never cease

Absalom, Absalom, third son of the king
(Absalom told his people)
Absalom, Absalom, raise your voice to sing
(Love could win the day)
Absalom, Absalom, ambassador of peace
(Absalom told his people)
Absalom, Absalom, your song will never cease
(They could be much more)
