Believe it or not, I engaged in some second-guessing about
whether kicking things off with an overture to expose the
principal themes might seem a bit pretentious for a rock album.
Then I realized that a concept album spanning the life of Alexander
the Great, incorporating recurring lyrical and melodic themes, is
pretty much the definition of grandiosity. And since I was already
thinking in terms of leitmotif about the melodic phrases that would
represent key characters and concepts, I decided to go for broke.
